Once but never Again

If what is were
And I walked slimmer and steadier
Shedding my old life, leaf by leaf
More content and less scared to spend nights alone
Yearning for daylight, one after another
Season to season with a glimmer of hope
That maybe one day again, the space between us is abridged.

If what was is
And I become the singer of songs again
I will go with her I love
And whilst the furred snow falls and bells jangle in the streets
I will be tucked away with she whom I love.

All talk no play.
So I am clothed and wrapped in blankets
Life oozing out of my bones
I wonder not, but my mind wanders in thought
Through the land of lost content
And I forget, from whence I came;
Things and people
Deeds and feelings
There I cannot go again.

The innocence of the times lost
The pretense
The purity of the moments
Now in the sinking ship
I set my sail
Sailcloth and wind, take me wherever.

A single smile for us both
Follow me not
For love or for peace
But forget me not; I was yours truly.
